Dear Reader:
I found these articles stuffed into the box along with a few poems. From what I could understand, the articles inspired a few of the poems that were written by Las Mariposas and their familia. Knowing what we know now about the truth of what happened all those years in the Dominican, it's easy to see why the sisters reacted so strongly to these articles and felt the need to reflect on the topics addressed. To see the poems, click here.

Dominican is Calm
Trujillo assures that the country is calm and the government is as stable as ever.
Ciudad Trujillo, June 22, 1943- This past week, there have been false reports that revolutionaries were in control of Monte Criste, San Pedro, and Puerta Plata and that forces were 65 miles outside Ciudad Trujillo waiting to attack.
Trujillo and the Dominican Government would like to make clear that these reports are false, and the country is perfectly calm. These false reports were created by Castro in order to instill fear in the Dominican people. He does this in order to gain favor and in the hopes that Trujillo’s loyal citizens will begin to doubt his ability to protect, but again these are false reports.
Trujillo also would like to use this incident to reiterate how listening to sources that have not been approved by the government can be dangerous to the public. These unauthorized sources are full of false information and slander in order to create confusion; this is
why they are banned. Officials have reported that “the most complete calm reigns in all parts of the country”, so there is no need for concern.

Three Sisters Found Dead
Three women with bright futures and their driver plummeted to their deaths while driving through the mountains.
Salcedo, Nov 27 1960- On November 24th, Dr. Minerva Mirabal de Traverez, Senora Maria Teresa Mirabal de Guzman, and Senora Patria Mirabal de Gonzalez and their driver Rafino de Cruz were found at the bottom of the mountain road overturned in their Jeep. They had driven over the edge of the mountain on their way back from visiting their husbands at the prison in La Victoria.
The sisters and their lived in Salcedo most of their lives, their father Enrique had owned the farm. They each left behind a family, as well as their elderly mother. It is suspected that they had been slightly intoxicated and driven off the road, for beer bottles were found in the car.
We hope that the community of Salcedo will help their families get through this terrible time.
